Job Title: Barista Trainer

Department: Latte Life

Reports To: General Manager – Latte Life

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Summary

A Barista is responsible for creating a welcoming customer experience while preparing and serving high-quality coffee, tea, and other beverages. This role involves taking orders, operating coffee equipment, maintaining cleanliness, and ensuring product consistency according to company standards. Baristas are expected to provide excellent customer service, handle transactions accurately, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work as part of a team are essential for success in this role.

Basic Functions And General Responsibilities

  • Beverage Preparation: Craft hot and cold beverages (espresso drinks, pour-overs, teas, specialty coffees) consistently, following recipes and quality standards.
  • Customer Service: Greet customers warmly, take orders accurately, and offer menu recommendations, including describing coffee blends and roast profiles.
  • Operational Excellence: Operate espresso machines, grinders, and brewers, ensuring they are calibrated and functioning correctly.
  • Cleanliness & Maintenance: Maintain a spotless, organized work area (behind the counter) and seating area, adhering to all health and sanitation regulations.
  • POS Transactions: Accurately process cash and credit card transactions using the POS system.
  • Stocking/Inventory: Restock supplies (cups, lids, syrups, beans) and assist with inventory management.
  • Teamwork: Collaborate with team members to manage busy rushes efficiently.

Training And Inclusion Responsibilities

  • Serve as an on-the-job trainer and role model for individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) participating in supported employment and skills training within the coffee shop. Provide hands-on instruction in core barista and café tasks, including drink preparation, food handling, customer service, cleaning, restocking, and use of equipment.
  • Break down job tasks into clear, manageable steps and adapt instruction methods to meet individual learning styles and abilities.
  • Use patience, encouragement, and positive reinforcement to support skill development and build confidence.
  • Model appropriate workplace behaviors, including punctuality, professionalism, teamwork, communication, and customer engagement.
  • Collaborate with supervisors, job coaches, and/or program staff to reinforce training plans, accommodations, and individualized goals.
  • Maintain a respectful, inclusive, and supportive work environment that promotes dignity, independence, and growth for all employees.
  • Maintain confidentiality and professionalism when working with individuals served by the organization.
  • Physical Expectations

This position requires extended periods of walking and standing with some periods of sitting – depending on the needs and activities of the individuals supported. It may require light (5 lbs.) to heavy lifting (50 pounds of dead weight) and occasional stooping, kneeling, bending, and/or climbing stairs again depending on the needs of the individual supported. The position will require occasional physical intervention if confronted by a person displaying combative or potentially dangerous behavior. Driving an agency or personal vehicle is an expectation.

Qualifications

  • Must have graduated from High School or obtained a General Equivalency Diploma.
  • Experience: Previous barista or customer service experience preferred, but not required—we will provide training for the right candidate.
  • Passion for Coffee: A genuine interest in learning about coffee, brewing techniques, and latte art.
  • Skills: Strong communication skills, multitasking abilities, and basic math skills.
  • Flexibility: Availability to work flexible hours, including early mornings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Must obtain and maintain training and certification in all required.
  • Must obtain a Class E driver’s license during new hire orientation– must carry minimum coverage applicable by law for auto insurance
  • Must Receive Seasonal Flu Vaccination
