Kitchen & Café Supervisor — Community Cookery Café 

Location: Newport, RI 


Schedule: 32–40 hours/week (weekends, early mornings, and occasional evenings required)

Community Cookery Café is a mission-driven training café operated by Newport Community School. We serve our community through great food, hands-on workforce development, and a welcoming environment for guests and trainees alike. We are looking for a dedicated Kitchen & Café Supervisor who thrives in a fast-paced, purpose-centered setting and enjoys mentoring emerging culinary professionals.

Position Overview 

The Kitchen & Café Supervisor oversees daily café operations, supports culinary training activities, and ensures high standards of food quality, safety, and service. This role is ideal for someone who is organized, energetic, and passionate about both hospitality and community impact.

Key Responsibilities 

  • Lead daily kitchen and café operations, ensuring smooth service and consistent quality 
  • Supervise, train, and support kitchen staff and culinary trainees 
  • Maintain compliance with food safety and sanitation standards 
  • Assist with menu execution, prep systems, and inventory management 
  • Support opening and closing procedures, including early morning prep and occasional night events 
  • Foster a positive, inclusive, and professional work environment 
  • Collaborate with the Hospitality Workforce Instructor/Chef on training goals and café initiatives

Required Qualifications 

  • Minimum 2 years of supervisory experience in a kitchen or café setting 
  • 5+ years of hands-on kitchen experience 
  • Strong understanding of food safety, kitchen operations, and service flow 
  • Ability to work weekends, early mornings, and occasional evenings 
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills 
  • Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure

Preferred Qualifications 

  • Food Safety Manager Certification (or willingness to obtain) 
  • Experience working in educational, nonprofit, or training-focused environments 
  • Passion for mentoring and developing emerging culinary professionals
